About the Role

Sunfox is looking for a Backend Engineer to design, build, and scale the services that power our products. You'll own backend systems end to end — from API design and data modeling to deployment on cloud infrastructure — and work closely with product, frontend, and DevOps to ship reliable, performant features. This role is a strong fit for someone who enjoys thinking about system design trade-offs and cares about writing clean, maintainable, well-tested code.

What You'll Do

• Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services, APIs, and integrations.
• Architect systems using both server-based and serverless approaches, choosing the right tool for each problem.
• Apply efficient system design techniques to keep services performant, resilient, and cost-effective as they scale.
• Build and maintain APIs and real-time services using REST, HTTP, gRPC, and socket/WebSocket programming.
• Deploy, monitor, and optimize workloads on AWS.
• Write clean, tested, well-documented code and participate in code reviews.
• Troubleshoot production issues, improve observability, and reduce operational toil.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate product requirements into technical solutions.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years of professional experience as a backend or software engineer.
• Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure, specifically AWS (e.g., EC2, Lambda, S3, RDS, API Gateway, IAM).
• Proficiency in Node.js and Python (experience with other backend languages is a plus).
• Practical experience with both server-based and serverless architectures, plus a solid grasp of efficient system design techniques (scalability, caching, load balancing, fault tolerance).
• Strong API and socket programming skills across REST, HTTP, and gRPC.
• Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases and sound data modeling (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, DynamoDB, MongoDB).
• Familiarity with version control (Git) and CI/CD workflows.
• Solid understanding of security best practices, authentication/authorization, and data protection.
• Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative, agile team.

Nice to Have

• Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Experience with message queues / event streaming (SQS, Kafka, RabbitMQ).
• Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CloudFormation, CDK).
• Experience with monitoring and observability tools (CloudWatch, Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana).
• Exposure to microservices architecture and distributed systems.
• Contributions to open-source projects or a public portfolio.
